Position Summary

Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator, Programs this leadership role is responsible for the overall operation of Lifesaving Society Swim for Life & Leadership programs, daily supervision of staff, planning of programs and schedules, performance evaluations, and to aid in the development of Aquatic programs for the Canada Games Centre. Additionally, this role performs administrative functions, assists with the delivery of programs, assists with personnel matters, and ensures safety policies and procedures are adhered to. The Aquatics Supervisor, Programs must be highly organized, manage time effectively, and complete scheduling tasks in a timely and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee program delivery of aquatic programs and services.
  • Ensure all programming meets Lifesaving Society standards, CGC standards, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Actively supervise weekday evening/weekend morning lessons (about 4 hours daily), on the pool deck.
  • Evaluate staff and programs to ensure a high standard of quality program is delivered
  • Provide immediate swim instructor/lifeguard coverage for unexpected demands and fill-in as a substitute swim instructor/lifeguard as required
  • Create and manage staff schedules for aquatic programs
  • Communicate effectively with staff and the public, addressing concerns efficiently.
  • Work in conjunction with Aquatics Coordinator to ensure program quality aligns with the Centre’s values and Sport for Life vision for programs
  • Assist in developing and expanding any procedural documents and training materials necessary for staff training
  • Assist with the input of program registration, changes, and cancellations
  • Capable of using independent judgment when needed, a professional demeanour under pressure and taking charge of emergency situations in absence of the Aquatics Coordinators
  • Leadership skills that instil confidence and trust in fellow employees and public
  • Work cooperatively with all levels in the organization (supervisors, staff, members, and patrons)
  • Work with all CGC departments in delivery of services
  • Conduct when scheduled/needed all the job description outlines of a Person on Duty (POD)
  • Perform, in a cooperative manner, other duties assigned by Aquatics Coordinators and/or Manager of Recreation & Program Services

Qualifications

Mandatory (to be maintained as a condition of employment)

  • 3 to 5 years of work experience in an aquatic setting in a Supervisory role
  • National Lifeguard Award (NL) & Airway Management
  • Pool option (current within two years)
  • Intermediate workplace First Aid (formerly SFA)
  • Swim for Life Instructor (SFL)
  • Lifesaving Instructor (LSI)
  • Instructor Trainer
  • Examiner
  • Experience in program development and implementation in a busy recreation environment.
  • Experience in supervising, mentoring & coaching staff.
  • Experience with inclusion programming

Desirable

  • National Lifeguard & First Aid Instructor

Working Conditions

  • Accommodate a variable work schedule that may include early morning, late evening, and weekend hours
  • Current schedule will be Tuesday-Friday 11:00am to 7:00pm, Saturday 7:30am to 3:30pm, please note schedule may change based on program needs
  • Additionally fulfill Person on Duty (POD) shifts 2:30pm to 10:30pm on rotation
  • Expanded hours will be required during Week 1 and Week 9 of programs and during staff evaluation periods
  • Working environment includes physical, emotional and mental demands
  • Safe lifting, carrying and first aid techniques
  • Exposure to loud noises and ability to concentrate in a busy environment

Compensation

Salary will be based on a range from $35,700-$48,960 commensurate with education and level of experience.
