Barrhill Feeders Inc. is searching for a full-time Pen Rider to join our progressive and growing team. Barrhill Feeders Inc. is currently feeding 75 000 head between two feedlot operations located 10 miles North of Picture Butte, AB or 10 miles East of Barons, AB. As a Pen Rider, you are responsible for the health and welfare of cattle in the feedlot while utilizing our modern treatment record system to effectively treat and manage sick and/or injured cattle in the feedlot.
Major Responsibilities:
– Check cattle in feedlot on horse back daily.
– Recognize illness or injury in cattle.
– Follow treatment protocols as outlined by Veterinarian.
– Maintain and treat sick or injured cattle.
– Sort and handle cattle in a safe and calm manner.
– Assist in keeping barn, chutes, and treatment areas clean, tidy and maintained.
– Communicate to Foreman any irregularities.
– Follow Foreman and Veterinarian instructions or recommendations.
– Other feedlot duties such as, but not limited to bedding, processing, yard maintenance, and driving equipment such as a skidsteer and/or loader (preferred, but not required).
Experience/Skills Required:
– Valid driver’s license.
– Good attitude and team player.
– Self-motivated.
– Attention to detail.
– Good communication skills.
– Experience in both recognizing sick and/or injured cattle and the feedlot industry.
– Horse husbandry and handling skills and preference will be given to applicants who already possess horses and tack.
– Cattle handling skills.
– Experience with operating equipment (loader, tractor, etc.) (preferred, but not required).
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:
– Working directly with cattle (on foot and horseback) and horses.
– Repetitive tasks.
– Ability to lift 60 lbs.
– Combination of sitting, standing, and walking.
– Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
– Use of computerized treatment system.
Hours:
– Shift Rotation: 8 days on, and 2 days off followed by 7 days on, and 4 days off.
– 7 AM- 4:30 PM (subject to change based on the time of year).
Transportation:
– Own transportation, valid driver’s license.
