The Butchart Gardens

The Butchart Gardens is looking for an individual to fill the following full-time position:

DEPARTMENT: Arts and Entertainment
POSITION: Display Technician

The Arts & Entertainment Department is responsible for creating and operating garden lighting, concerts, fireworks, the Christmas display, as well as overseeing all artwork, displays, graphics, and photography. To support this work, the Display Technician is responsible for creating, constructing, installing and maintaining displays on site, including Christmas displays, retail displays for the Gift Store, seasonal holiday displays, as well as assisting with the annual Historical Display. The Display Technician works in conjunction with graphics, lighting, and photography and is an integral part of the Christmas installation overseeing the creation and installation of a variety of Christmas themed displays. This position also works closely with the Gift Store to create seasonal and merchandise displays for a retail environment. This position requires a self-motivated, creative individual with a design background who has an ability to bring new ideas and stories to our display spaces. A positive attitude and a solid work ethic is essential. Experience with crafts, scenic design or props, construction, and paint would also be an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to:
• Under the supervision of the Director of Arts & Entertainment, assist with the preparation, research, creation, and construction of Christmas, special occasion, historical, and seasonal displays.
• Maintain Christmas displays through the season and assist with setting up, removing, operating and maintaining other elements of the Christmas presentation.
• Oversee the work of seasonal staff during the installation and removal of the Christmas display.
• Repair, refurbish, and maintain Christmas and other displays throughout the year.
• Create, install and maintain seasonal displays in the Gardens.
• Set up and take down Christmas displays and other seasonal or retail displays.
• Create displays for Gift Store windows and floor displays, using merchandise to promote current products, or for other display purposes as required.
• Install artwork for display or retail purposes. Replace items and redesign areas as required.
• Assist with assembling and installing the annual Historical Display and Ross Family Perspective.
• Coordinate display materials inventory and assist with ordering display materials as required.
• Assist with other Arts and Entertainment department duties in graphics, photography, and lighting.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
• A genuine positive attitude, strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others in a team based setting.
• A strong sense of initiative and an ability to work independently, as well as in a group setting.
• Knowledge of design, visual presentation, displays, and possessing an artistic perspective and imagination.
• Comfortable working indoors or outdoors, in all weather conditions.
• An ability to work with hand and small power tools to create displays.
• Flexibility in scheduling of hours. Evening and weekend work is required depending on the season.
• Valid BC Driver’s License

This is a year-round, full-time position with starting in October 2024. Shifts will be scheduled to suit the requirements of the department and the operation of the seasonal presentations. Seasonal evening and weekend work is required, as well as occasional overtime. Candidates must be prepared to work outdoors in inclement weather. An adequate level of physical fitness is also necessary as the job activities are repetitive in nature and require lifting strength, so individuals with repetitive strain or back injuries would not find this position suitable. A considerable amount of walking is also involved to move around the property. Please note that this position is contingent upon successful completion of a physical assessment.

Remuneration will be commensurate with this level of responsibility and the qualifications of the successful candidate. Starting from $30.25 per hour. The position offers a benefits package, a RRSP matching program, 3 weeks’ vacation (plus an additional 2 weeks paid staff holiday during The Gardens closure each year), following a six-month probationary period.

Applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.
