THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, the Power Engineer (Fourth Class) will be responsible for the mechanical work in the operation of steam and refrigeration plants that consists of ammonia and Freon refrigeration systems and high-pressure steam boilers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operating Freon and ammonia gas refrigeration systems along with high-pressure steam boilers
  • Troubleshooting, installing, inspecting, repairing and overhauling temperature control equipment
  • Testing boiler feed water and adding chemicals as required
  • Measuring and recording temperature and pressure readings on the various cooling system units of equipment and boiler systems
  • Adjusting controls to ensure specified operation and output of equipment and boiler systems
  • Participating in the inspection and repair of boilers, refrigeration equipment and other related equipment
  • Participating in the rebuilding of valves and compressors
  • Performing minor mechanical repairs to equipment such as pumps, boiler, compressors and components to correct malfunctions in operation
  • Dismantling and testing functional parts including but not limited to gauges, valves and condensers
  • Cleaning, adjusting and replacing defective parts
  • Following a preventative maintenance schedule including but not limited to greasing and oiling equipment
  • Maintaining cleanliness, safety and sanitation of the equipment, mechanical rooms and boiler room
  • Preparing boiler for annual inspection
  • Repairing steam leaks on piping and associated equipment
  • Assists with and supports maintenance work (building and mechanical) in the plant
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of power engineering courses from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Possession of a valid fourth-class power engineer’s certificate
  • Considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration and high-pressure boiler system
  • Experience in an ammonia refrigeration plant would be an asset.
  • Ability to work within divisional or project teams
  • Excellent communication skills
