About the Opportunity
Methanex is currently seeking a Laboratory Technician to join the team in Medicine Hat, AB on a full-time basis. This is a one-year temporary position.

The Laboratory Technician analyses methanol product and water treatment samples, as well as in-process and environmental samples to ensure quality control, and expediently reports results.

More specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Obtains methanol product samples safely and reliably; analyses and reports methanol product impurities
  • Analyses and reports process samples, water treatment samples, and environmental samples accurately and reliably, and scrutinizes quality control charts for trend analysis to identify when to take action to enhance lab reliability
  • Communicates unexpected and obscure results to the correct authority
  • Completes an accurate report of daily analysis
  • Adheres to standard laboratory best practices, methods, and methanol product testing procedures
  • Adheres to wastewater procedures required by environmental permit
  • Performs all stipulated Certificate of Analysis tests and reports and complies
  • Recognizes and reports an out-of-control data point on a quality control chart to an approved authority as per laboratory management manual
  • Coordinates special requests and other non-routine testing and provides insight to interpretation of results (for example, during turnaround activities)
  • Operates lab instruments including pH meters, spectrophotometers, automatic distillation units, balances, gas chromatographs, turbidimeters, Karl Fischer Titrators, personal computers, sulfur analyzers, densitometers, ion chromatographs, and inductively coupled plasma units to carry out routine analysis
  • Learns and demonstrates appropriate methods of titration, burets reading, endpoint analysis, and peak analysis
  • Calibrates or checks equipment for accuracy and performance as per the daily analysis sheet
  • Maintains an accurate record of equipment maintenance, lab cleanliness, and performs general housekeeping duties
  • Carries out minor instrumentation troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Demonstrates a quality focus in daily work activities and supports continuous improvement initiatives
  • Standardizes reagents and investigates sources of unexpected results
  • Completes inventory management responsibilities on a monthly basis
  • Complies with all relevant safety, health, and environmental procedures to ensure a healthy and safe work environment.

About You
To qualify, you will need to possess an undergraduate degree in science, with Chemistry as a preferred discipline, or a post-secondary diploma in Chemical Technology, along with 1 year of related laboratory experience.

Additionally, the following assets would be preferred, but not required:

  • Experience in the chemical manufacturing industry
  • Experience working with quality programs, such as ISO 14000 or higher
  • Quality audit training
  • Laboratory-related health, safety, and environment training
  • Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LMIS)
  • Laboratory practice experience
  • Knowledge of product analysis quality control
  • Exposure to chromatography
  • Experience with volumetric flasks, pipets, and automatic pipets
  • Experience in solution and standard preparation
  • Demonstrated ability to keep accurate and neat records
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs
