Irrigation Trades Assistant

The Butchart Gardens is looking for an individual to fill the following position:

DEPARTMENT: MAINTENANCE
POSITION: Irrigation Trades Assistant

DUTIES:
Working under the direction of the Plumbing, and Water Delivery Specialists:
• Assist with maintaining extensive irrigation water systems.
• Assist with maintaining The Gardens storm water and sewer system.
• Assist Gardening department with irrigation/sprinkler repairs and modifications with the irrigation system
• Maintain fountains/ponds large and small and associated equipment.
• Ensure compliance of CRD Cross Connection Control Program and maintenance/testing of related equipment.
• Maintain safe work practices.
• Work with other departments and staff in non-plumbing related activities as required to ensure the smooth operation of The Gardens.

REQUIREMENTS:
• Understanding of and adherence to WHMIS and WorkSafe BC Regulations.
• Valid driver’s license with clean drivers abstract
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Possess analytical/problem solving skills.
• Valid cross connection control tester certificate would be an asset, or willing to become certified
• Experience in irrigation or other pipe trades would be an asset
• Experience with pools, ponds and fountains would be an asset
• Knowledge of irrigation systems would be an asset
• Ability to work unsupervised.
• Must be capable of physical work in inclement weather. (Physical assessment required).
• Follow company policies and procedures and support the management team.

This is a seasonal position beginning in mid-August and ending November 30, 2024, with the possibility of continued seasonal employment for the winter season. Shifts will be primarily Monday to Friday although evening/weekend work and some overtime may be expected. Starting from $27.34 per hour. Remuneration will commensurate with the level of responsibility and qualifications of the successful candidate.
