Marine Atlantic is currently looking for a Occupational Hygienist to work with our Health Safety & Environment department, located in North Sydney, NS.

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department is responsible for the development and promotion of health, safety, and environmental protection programs throughout the company, both on vessels and at our shore facilities. The HSE Department renders high-level advice, guidance and information concerning health, safety, and environmental protection issues to managers, supervisors, safety committees and employees.

Reporting to the Manager, Health Safety and Environment, the Occupational Hygienist evaluates and monitors health and safety hazards, including the risk of exposure to chemical, physical, biohazardous and ergonomic hazards; and develops strategies to control risks in the workplace. The Occupational Hygienist inspects food and beverage service areas, public facilities, hotel accommodations, water systems, air quality systems and other workplaces to ensure compliance with government regulations regarding sanitation, pollution control, the handling and storage of hazardous substances, and workplace safety within all Marine Atlantic properties. The Occupational Hygienist develops, reviews, and updates the hygiene standards, policies and practices programs as needed to ensure continued improvement.

The Occupational Hygienist provides services to the corporation and its traveling public through health education and health protection, including enforcement of applicable legislations.

Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Provides day to day technical advice, expertise, and direction to ensure both compliance with legislative requirements and conformance to industry and company standards.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of Industrial Hygiene specific initiatives and programs.
  • Completes detailed Occupational Hygiene technical reports.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments around Industrial Hygiene legislation, trends, and best practices.
  • Builds effective relationships with key stakeholders and Health, Safety, and Environment team members.
  • Inspects the sanitary conditions of food services, hotel areas, and other public facilities both on vessels and shore-based to ensure they operate in accordance with all applicable legislation.
  • Reviews and participates in Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) planning and ensure flawless management of all identified Critical Control Points.
  • Educates food services staff in proper food handling, infection control, sanitation, safety, and hygiene.
  • Investigates food borne complaints, executes food or product recalls and condemns suspect foodstuffs.
  • Intervenes and applies corrective action in situations that may present to be hazardous.
  • Assists in development and delivery of educational programs, toolbox meetings, Job Safety Analysis, and general training relevant to MAI employees, the public and contractors.
  • Works with supervisors and managers to address unsafe work practices and ensure that information is recorded in the tracking system – prepare monthly reports back to workgroups and senior management based on information in the system.
  • Provides timely response and guidance on health-related issues associated with physical, chemical, and biological materials. Makes sure that incidents are investigated, root cause analysis is conducted, reports are prepared, makes recommendations on corrective actions, follows-up to ensure corrective actions are implemented and records details in tracking system.
  • Conducts surveys including but not limited to indoor air quality (IAQ), radon gas, radiation, noise assessments, as well as any other hazardous substances or related safety concerns.
  • Collects samples of water for analysis; measures physical, biological and chemical workplace hazards; and conducts safety and environmental audits, tabulates and communicate results.
  • Investigates health and safety related complaints, spills of hazardous chemicals, outbreaks of diseases or poisonings and workplace incidents.
  • Inspects workplaces to ensure that equipment, materials, and production processes do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or to the general public.
  • Coordinates inspections with the appropriate regulatory body and vessel personnel.
  • Monitors the reporting as outlined in the Safety Management System (SMS) as it relates to onboard health services and identifies improvements to the SMS.
  • Works with HSE to implement all new and existing programs.
  • Provide training to new hires.
  • Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • University Degree or College Diploma in relevant field.
  • Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a relevant role.

OR

a combination of equivalent education, job-related training and experience in a related position.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Essential):

  • Proficient communication and interpersonal skills, able to work collaboratively within teams and cross functionally.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Motivation techniques, coaching, team building, sound judgement, strong problem solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Understanding of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point requirements and safe food handling practices.
  • Understanding of Canadian Health and Safety legislation (Canada Labour Code Part II or provincial regulations) and applicable Public Health legislation.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Desirable):

  • Professional Designation and/or Certificate in relevant field.
