Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrates from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey’s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds, and copper cathodes.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking two (2) Production Area Coach (Trainees) to join our Long Harbour Operations in Long Harbour, NL. These permanent positions involve 24-month rotations within different areas of the Long Harbour Operations. They will be on a 12-hour schedule working at the Long Harbour Operations site.

The Production Area Coach (Trainee) is responsible for the overall performance, delivery, and development of the crew in meeting the organizational objectives based on the needs of the business stakeholders in alignment with Vale Vision, Mission & Values, and the Long Harbour Operations Purpose & Principles. The Coach acts as a director, initiator, mentor and supporter to the crew as it progresses and develops through different phases of capability. The Coach will align the behavior of the crew with Vale’s principles and attributes. They are responsible for developing and sustaining a productive working relationship between all members of Long Harbour Operations while supporting the reliable and safe production of the world’s best nickel.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Participate in short-term job rotations in different areas of the Long Harbour Operations site.
  • Receive individualized mentoring and coaching, as well as formal evaluations with continuous feedback.
  • Develop your leadership skills.

  • Ensure Home Safe behaviors are integral in all crew member activity. Coaches’ crews to consistently achieve ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) and to take corrective action to address noncompliance.
  • Develop the crew to become self-sufficient in operating and maintaining the day-to-day operations, while ensuring that all regulations/standards, company and organizational concepts and philosophies.
  • Accountable for leading and training Star Point (Personnel, Asset Care, Operations Planning, Responsible Care, Process) crew members to allow the self-management of related matters to ensure compliance to schedules, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Create a work environment that generates ownership and initiative in crew members that are actively engaged and understand their role in sustaining the core processes.
  • Develop the crew to prioritize work and training requirements based on business, team and individual thought process.
  • Guide and audit the work practices utilizing VPS and 5S Work Practices to approve, plan, schedule and execute tasks within the area(s).
  • Supervise daily work of production employees.
  • Monitor work efficiency through the auditing of KPIs.
  • Participate in emergency and breakdown situations as required, drawing on external resources only as necessary, by providing troubleshooting, problem identification, materials procurement, and resource allocation knowledge as required to correct the situation as efficiently and effectively as possible to minimize production impact within the framework of established maintenance policies and procedures.

About You

Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering is preferred (any discipline).

Experience:

  • 1-2 years’ experience in a supervisory role preferred.
  • Industrial and/or operating environment preferred.
  • Previous metallurgical knowledge and experience an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Supervisory, leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent communication and team building skills.
