Responsibilities

What you will be doing…

  • Report to the Manager, Career & Employment in supporting NSCC’s Student Success Value of “…empower[ing] students with applied learning, services and supports to propel them on their way to career success and fulfilment.”
  • Assist Central Student Affairs teams, as well as campus faculty and staff, in cultivating and developing appropriate employment supports for use throughout the student life cycle including transition to employment.
  • Work closely with internal partners such as NSCC Alumni, NSCC Centre for Teaching and Learning, School Managers, and individual campuses, as well as external partners such as Nova Scotia Works, Regional Enterprise Networks (RENs), the Immigrant Settlement Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) and other community stakeholders who support employment.

A large amount of the work includes providing information and assistance to employers wanting to navigate NSCC departments to recruit NSCC students and graduates or connect with NSCC programs and campuses for site visits and partnerships.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a post-secondary diploma in human services, social services or related discipline. Certification as a career practitioner would be considered an asset (such as NSCDA or Career Professionals of Canada).
  • You possess three years of work experience in employment services or equivalent occupational experience such as community based educational supports, social services or recreational programming.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel, Teams), and database or client management systems (e.g., LaMPSS, BANNER, PeopleSoft, Orbis, HSPnet).
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work.
  • Experience in supporting learners in post-secondary training programs access and use labour market information, job search techniques, career management tools, and other resources to assist adults in transition from school to work.
  • Occupational experience that includes facilitating information sessions, workshops or group sessions with adults.
  • Experience supporting persons who experience barriers to employment in employment readiness programming would be considered a significant asset.
  • Experience supporting employers in the process of recruiting candidates and developing organizational skills in providing a safe and inclusive workspace would be considered a significant asset.
  • Experience supporting/providing services to students and prospective students would be considered an asset.

Relevant Skills and Knowledge

  • You have specific knowledge and skills in job search and career transition techniques, employment resources and tools, and career planning.
  • You can locate, use and interpret labour market information for yourself and others.
  • You are known for your strong interpersonal and superior customer service skills.
  • Your superb team working skills enable you to contribute positively to a team environment
  • You have experience in working with equity deserving groups such as African Nova Scotians, women in non-traditional occupations, 2SLGBTQIA persons, persons with disabilities, and Indigenous people in a career development or educational context.
  • You are known for your problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • You are a strong communicator.
  • You possess excellent organizational skills.
  • You have proven records and information management skills and abilities specifically related to using database applications to record, store and use information.
  • You show a strong commitment to community involvement such as community economic development, youth initiatives, community advisory committees, etc.
