Maintenance Technician

Reporting to the Senior Maintenance Technician, the ideal candidate will be an experienced Maintenance Technician who is completely comfortable working on property, or on the water, in all weather conditions, including rain, shine or snow. As a Maintenance Technician, you see the big picture but are detailed in all that you do. With a small but dedicated maintenance team that addresses both seasonal and activation needs, the Maintenance Technician must have an ingrained sense of teamwork while equally adept at working independently. Timely follow-up and reporting of work progress and completion standards are also core to your success.

The Maintenance Technician is a key contributor to ensuring those who frequent Nova Scotia’s most visited destinations have a safe and enjoyable experience by taking a hands-on approach to coming up with practical and creative solutions to a variety of maintenance challenges. No two days are the same in this role, as responsibilities can include seasonal set up of both marine and property related waterfront amenities, minor construction, renovating and rejuvenating infrastructure, and supporting specific events such as the Halifax Busker or Evergreen festivals. As visitation and activities run on a seven-day per week basis across many of Build Nova Scotia’s properties, the Maintenance Technician must be available to work scheduled weekends and possibly, some evenings. While Halifax will be your home base, you should also look forward to getting out to our other properties in Dartmouth, Bedford, and Peggy’s Cove.

Responsibilities

  • Complete preventative maintenance repairs and upkeep in a safe manner
  • Support with setup and removal of waterfront events
  • Complete minor construction tasks
  • Operate power tools and equipment in a safe manner
  • Keep property areas and facilities safe, professional and up to required standards
  • Conduct landscaping duties as needed within waterfront environment
  • Support with snow removal in winter months
  • Storing, operating and maintaining a variety of maintenance equipment
  • Ensuring site rules and procedures are being followed and adhered to
  • Assisting with other maintenance duties as directed

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

• Experience in some or all of these categories within a maintenance setting: marina, property, landscaping, lighting, water and or waste collection, or associated repair work.

• Knowledge and experience with hand and power tools.

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members.

• Good communication and conflict resolution skills.

• Comfort using the Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Word.

• Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions.

• A driven and perpetually positive attitude.

The following experience qualifications would be considered significant assets:

• Related post-secondary education.

• Experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or other trades.

• Marine infrastructure construction and repair.

• First Aid and WHMIS training.

• Forklift Operator’s License and Fall Arrest training.

• Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

• Radio Operators Certificate (Marine).

• Experience working on high profile properties with significant public visitation.

• Experience dealing with both internal and public stakeholders.
