On an annual basis, the Foundation raises an average of $10 million in revenue and manages $33 million in assets to fund critical priorities that align donor interests and those that transform health care today and for the future.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced accountant to join our team. Our current Director of Finance and Administration is retiring after a decade of dedicated service, leaving behind a strong legacy and an opportunity for a new leader to continue her tradition of excellence. Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director of Finance and Administration will play a crucial role in overseeing the financial aspects of our organization, the annual home lottery, information technology, and supporting human resources initiatives. Working closely with the Board of Directors’ Finance, Audit and Investment Committee, the position is responsible for financial planning and preparation of financial statements, including investment management, budget and annual audit coordination, cash flow forecasting, recommending internal controls, developing and implementing financial and risk policies and procedures, all ensuring compliance with Canada Revenue Agency rules for our charitable donations.

What you’ll be doing:

People Leadership

  • Provide leadership, direction, and management for the Foundation’s Finance and Administration team, and collaborate with teams across the organization, fostering a culture of purpose, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support the Foundation’s commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and AntiRacism strategies.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Development team to support comprehensive fundraising strategies.
  • Oversee employees working in financial and administrative functions managing payroll, vacation, health, life and LTD and pension benefits.

Financial Management

  • Work with the President & CEO and Finance, Audit, and Investment Committee to oversee operational budgets and cash flow forecasts to mitigate operational risks.
  • Responsible for the planning and development of the annual operating budget in collaboration with the CEO and the management team.
  • Assist the CEO and management team in achieving budget objectives by creating transparent reporting processes, analyzing variances, and assisting managers in adjusting expenditure plans as required.
  • Ensures financial policies and procedures are in place to continually evaluate best industry practice in alignment with the Foundation’s future needs and budget realities.
  • Responsible for treasury management including cash flow forecasting and managing all bank and investment accounts.
  • Oversee all accounting functions: process/review expenditures, payables and pledge receivables, monthly fees, and general ledger entries.
  • Implement the Foundation’s Investment and spending policies, asset allocation, and investment manager evaluation as defined by the Investment Committee and approved by the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as primary contact for and work closely with the Foundation’s investment managers to ensure adherence to the Foundation’s policy guidelines.
  • Oversee processing of donations and pledges, issuing charitable and non-charitable receipts and that the Foundation is fulfilling spending requirements on charitable activities.
  • Oversee designated fund disbursement requests to the Saint John Regional Hospital and Horizon Health Authority.
  • Ensure effective internal controls and risk management practices are in place to safeguard assets.
  • Plan for and manage the yearly financial audit with external auditors.
  • File T3010 annual information return, maintaining appropriate books and records.
  • Maintain external relationships with banks, auditors, insurance, and other third-party vendors including lottery consultants.
  • Manage financials and deliverables for the success of the home lottery with legal council and government regulators.

Administrative and Operational Management

  • Manage relationships with payroll, insurance, health benefit and CRM vendors.
  • Oversee management, integrity, and operations of the CRM and human resource software.
  • Oversee the financial reports generated by Financial Edge data system and ensure their accuracy and completeness and reconciliation with monthly financial reports.

What we want to see from you:

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field along with a minimum of 5 years of progressively senior finance experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience managing accounting professionals.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA).
  • Proven financial analytical skills, including the ability to identify risks, opportunities, trends, and relationships.
  • Strategic thinker who can support making decisions that help advance our mission while remaining fiscally responsible.
  • Excellent computer skills, financial management software, and the ability to learn new computer programs efficiently.
  • Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid knowledge of financial analysis and forecasting methodologies.
  • Ability to foster collaborative, effective working relationships with peers, employees, donors, government officials and other external contacts.
  • Advise on contract negotiations from a financial impact perspective.
  • Previous experience in a non-profit or a public section is an asset.
  • Knowledge of and experience with donor/prospect databases (Raiser’s Edge NXT) is an asset.
  • Sound and independent judgment; ability to maintain absolute confidentiality and discretion where required.
  • Successful candidates must undergo a Criminal Record Check.
