ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Black & McDonald Limited (Atlantic Region) is actively seeking an Intermediate Electrical Estimator to join our dynamic estimating team. This position reports directly to the Estimating Department Manager for Atlantic Canada, and will be working within the Estimating Department located at 60 Cutler Avenue, Dartmouth, NS. The position involves working on a full range of projects which would include commercial, government, industrial and institutional markets.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing medium to large sized electrical estimates, which may be stand-alone or a component of a multi-discipline proposal,
  • Reviewing tender documents to determine project requirements,
  • Seeking clarification on missing/incomplete information and monitor for scope change during the estimating period,
  • Performing pre-bid site visits to collect important information for estimate development,
  • Preparing labour, material, and equipment estimates based on tender documentation, schematic drawings and project specifications,
  • Liaising with owners, consultants, general contractors, subtrades and suppliers, to seek estimate clarifications/inputs and foster strong relationships for future growth,
  • Collaborating with field staff on execution methodology to ensure accuracy of estimate,
  • Compiling proposal submission in accordance with tender requirements,
  • Stewarding bid review meetings with Management to communicate scope and seek alignment on costs, risks and mitigating factors,
  • Working with Project Managers and Field Staff upon contract award to familiarize them with the proposal and provide support as required if change orders are identified,
  • Participating in lesson learned sessions with project staff, discussing successes and identifying areas for improvement to be integrated into future estimates.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An electrical trade certificate, electrical engineering degree or electrical technologist diploma/certificate,
  • 5-7 years demonstrated experience estimating electrical construction projects; field experience would be considered an asset,
  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills, to interact effectively with customers, vendors and employees at all levels of the organization,
  • Strong Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and Projects) skills,
  • Working knowledge of Accubid/Trimble estimating software,
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and Canadian building code requirements,
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment,
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills, stewarding to time-sensitive deadlines,
  • Ability to obtain security clearances for visiting classified worksites,
  • Valid drivers license for worksite visits.

WHAT TO EXPECT

In your first week, expect to:

  • Meet our staff and learn about each division within Black & McDonald,
  • Set-Up your workstation,
  • Be prepared to listen and learn! Complete our online orientation which introduces candidates to Black & McDonald, our policies and procedures and WHMIS training.

In your three months, expect to:

  • Spend time with the Estimating Manager to gain an understanding of role expectations and estimating processes,
  • Meet with Division Managers to gain an understanding of each Division’s objectives and key clients,
  • Spend time in the field meeting field staff and becoming familiar with execution methodologies, challenges, efficiencies, etc.,
  • Become familiar with Master Service Agreements to ensure estimates are developed in accordance with these important documents,
  • Participate in site visits and bid review meetings to observe Black & McDonald estimating practices,
  • Develop medium sized estimates for electrical scopes, working closely with a Sr. Electrical Estimator and Construction Superintendents to build on your knowledge of Black & McDonald’s business practices.
